We are still celebrating last night's wonderful Teacher of the Year event! So many amazing educators to celebrate! Congratulations again to 2025 Teacher of the Year, Bruce Rekstad, who left with a $4,000 check, courtesy of our friends at Vern Eide. Also, a huge congratulations to the other four finalists, Jennifer Aerts, Bryan Aukerman, Scott Amundson, and Jessica Foley. New this year, thanks to the generosity of the Sioux Falls Public Schools Education Foundation, these four finalists walked away with $1,000 each. So many wonderful memories were shared last night! We are so grateful to everyone who attended, from nominees and their friends and families to past ToY winners, past educators, school board members, SDEA friends, and SFSD administrators, it truly was an unforgettable night! 🎉 Congratulations to our February Students of the Month! 🎉
We are so proud of these outstanding students for leading by example. You are truly role models in our building!
Thank you for living the Edison DREAM and inspiring others to do the same. Keep up the great work, and continue to show what it means to be a leader at Edison! 🌟

A recent Facebook post regarding Washington High School falsely claimed a routine request for a birth certificate was related to immigration status.
State Law (SDCL 13-27-3.1-3.3) requires all public school students to have a birth certificate on file within 30 days of enrollment. When required records are missing from student files, school staff regularly attempt to contact families before sending the required information to the State’s Attorney.
These requests are made solely to ensure compliance with State Law and to maintain complete student records. They are in no way related to immigration enforcement. We are committed to protecting the privacy of our students and their families.
Please reach out to your child’s school or the district office with any questions rather than relying on social media for accurate information. We appreciate your cooperation in keeping student records up to date.

Last week, our Student Council held a Super Bowl guessing fundraiser to support the Humane Society. Thanks to everyone's participation, we were able to make a meaningful donation! On Friday, our Student Council members had the special opportunity to present the check—and even spend some time cuddling an adorable kitten named Moo. We appreciate everyone who contributed to this great cause!

Last week, our 8th grade SLA students hosted their annual Guatemalan market! They deepened their knowledge of Guatemala while enhancing their Spanish language skills. Afterward, they created a Guatemalan artifact or handicraft and prepared presentations for our market day. This year, we were excited to invite students in our Newcomer classroom to experience the market, and everyone had an amazing time! It was wonderful to watch our Spanish-speaking newcomer students connect with our Spanish Immersion students in their native language.

Today, we had the pleasure of celebrating our Students of the Month from the first semester with their families. It was wonderful recognizing these incredible students and all their hard work! A big thank you to BRIO for providing beautiful music and showing off the amazing talent here at Edison. Go Cats!

🎉 A big congratulations to our amazing Staff All Star, Mrs. Mollie Weflen! 🎉
Thanks to her dedication and countless hours of hard work, Edison now boasts over ten active clubs, providing students with incredible opportunities to get involved and connect. Her efforts have played a huge role in fostering the vibrant, supportive community we cherish here at Edison.
Thank you, Mrs. Weflen, for your passion and commitment—you truly make a difference, and we’re so lucky to have you as part of the Edison family!

Congratulations to Sophia, Kylee, and Simon for representing Edison at the SD Jr Honor Choir this weekend in Rapid City! Best of luck—sing loud, sing proud, and make us all shine!

A big shoutout to our January Students of the Month! Thank you for working hard, living out the Edison DREAM, and showing great leadership in our school community. Keep up the amazing work!

Last month, our 6th graders brought history to life—literally! Staff and students teamed up for a hands-on, mock mummification, recreating the fascinating rituals of ancient times. The students impressed us with their knowledge, stayed engaged throughout, and most importantly, had a blast!

Reminder, no school tomorrow, January 10th!

Join the PTO for a EMS Spotlight Skate on Friday, 1/17. Bring your school ID or this flyer for discounted admission and skate rental. Hope to see you there!

Spanish 1 students put their first semester learning to the test as they worked both collaboratively and cooperatively to unlock their team boxes in an escape room-style game. They demonstrated resilience and applied their language skills to achieve a common goal. The activity was both challenging and fun, with one team successfully opening their box just before time ran out! ¡Buen trabajo!

Happy New Year from everybody at SFSD! Here's to another year of opportunities and possibilities. We are excited to welcome back students and staff TOMORROW, January 2nd, 2025! We can’t wait to see everyone!
